In addition to visiting one of the Boston Tax Help Coalition’s free tax sites staffed by IRS certified volunteers, the BTHC also promotes a service called Free File that is also approved by the IRS. Residents can click here to learn about this IRS – facilitated Free File program. Free File is an online tool that allows households making $64,000 a year or less to file their federal tax returns for free, without a preparer. To get started, go to IRS.gov/freefile, click on “Start Free File Now,” and select a Free File software option that best suits your needs. To complete your taxes using Free File, you will need an email address and the necessary documents for your income and tax deductions. Free File is fast, easy, and it’s free! This is just one of many resources that Boston residents can use to effectively file their taxes this year.
Please see the FreeFile flyer (in English and Spanish) for more information on how to use Free File.
