Do you have a life dream such as buying a house or moving to a nicer apartment?  We at Mayor Walsh’s Office of Financial Empowerment believe that financial capability programming is one way that you can work towards your dreams.  The President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy defines personal financial literacy as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being.” (2008 Annual Report to the President).   The Roxbury Center for Financial Empowerment was created by Mayor Martin J. Walsh to help Boston residents obtain and use such knowledge and skills.   Financial empowerment is about YOU taking control of your life and your finances – being proactive and using all the tools available to you in the community.   This includes basic tasks like opening and managing a checking or savings account, learning how to analyze and improve your credit score, and creating a long term financial plan.  A plan for the future might include improving job skills and going back to school to secure a higher paying job.  It could also include planning for your financial future, with a savings plan and/or buying a car or a home.

Without a good financial education, you let others make your financial decisions for you—you may not even realize you have the power to make financial decisions, to repair your credit and/or plan for the future.   Financial coaching is available for free in Dudley Square!  You can increase your confidence about finances and long-term planning by working with a Financial Coach from the Roxbury Center for Financial Empowerment.  Begin your journey to financial empowerment—take advantage of the free services offered at the Roxbury Center!  Come in for a free orientation to learn about the programs offered and work out a schedule that is convenient for you (daytime orientation sessions offered on Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. or evening by appointment).

Bankrate issued a short quiz to test your financial smarts: take their quiz by clicking here to see how you stack up!  Not happy with your score?  It is never too early or too late to begin building financial empowerment.  It will allow you to earn more, spend less, and get the things you really want for you and your family.

Please call us today to learn how you can incorporate financial capability services into your life and start moving towards success.
